I enjoy sci-fi I really do and I was able to appreciate this book for what it was. A sci-fi action story, but it is complicated. To give a short description of the story without giving anything important away will be difficult. The story which takes place sometime in the future after Red Rising, begins with Darrow our heroine finishing up at the academy and being ruined by his darn ego as always. Darrow isn’t the type of hero I route for, his whining and ego consistently had me upset with him. I can though forgive him for doing the right things in the end. After finishing at the academy I cannot even mention anything else without giving away some kind of plot twist or another. This book is full of plot twist it will keep you on your toes or completely confused. There was a few times while reading I just had to stop and try to work it out in my head. I would like to recommend this book to anyone who had read Red Rising and loved it as much as I did. Golden Son while pack full of story is still a good follow-up to it predecessor and still left me wanting to read the next book in the series.
Golden Son is book two in the Red Rising trilogy*.
*I mention it as a series because I believe while it was intended as a trilogy to begin with there is a fourth book coming out.
Growing up my family was fortunate enough to have a lake house that we would go to during the summer to enjoy all things lake life. Recently my family made the decision to sell the lake home and I am glad I was able to bring my son to visit at least once. This picture popped up on my time hop today and had me thinking. This is where I grew up, where I learned new words and all about love. Where I accomplished things from fighting dragon and saving princesses, to walking on the moon. This is where I spent nights afraid of clowns and vampires. A place where I cast spells and survived the apocalypse. I look back at the days of growing up and I remember this place. A place I was able to escape and read. A place where I was wasn’t bothered by everyday life but was able to wonder around unencumbered. I was able to explore the wood and swim in the lake; to lay in the sand and build a castle. I believe having only books as a form of entertainment as the night drew near helped grow my imagination beyond the normal. I need to find my new perfect place to read. Where, may I ask, is yours?
I started this blog a few days ago and I kind of feel like I am Mae just beginning to work for The Circle. For those of you who don’t have a blog and don’t know, and for those of you who do and can relate; there is an endless amount of promotion that goes on across multiple social media platforms. There is tweeting, and re-tweeting, likes and hearts, reading, commenting and following . It can be a bit overwhelming, but in the times we live, it is what must be done. When Mae first starts at The Circle, a giant technology company, she is super thrilled. Slowly though she is consumed with the everyday task and lack of privacy it takes to keep up with the ever-growing company. From an outside prospective I find The Circle to be almost a horror novel. It makes me want to run away to the woods and hide with no technology in sight. If you can’t take a hard look at yourself and the world as it relates to technology this book might not be for you. I did give this book a good rating though because I really did enjoy it. I enjoyed following Mae’s thought processes, meeting her family, and learning her new job. Eggers does a great job of helping you become engrossed in his dystopian future. I recommend this book to anyone who doesn’t think we could end up this way and to the people who are afraid we will. Have some fun and join Mae at The Circle.

The Circle was adapted into a movie featuring Emma Watson
Mars!!! Humanity has made it to Mars in this Ya-ish sci-fi book. Taking place in a distant future this book follows the life of Darrow a 16 yr old miner on Mars. I don’t was to dip further into the plot line because when I had started reading this book I did so while in the dark. In my opinion it made the first few chapters of the book all the better! Pierce Brown knows how to captivate an audience, I read this book while on vacation and still couldn’t put it down. Luckily I was using my e-reader which is super portable. This book was a Hunger Games mix with Star Wars kinda read. I love the imagery and didn’t skip a word. The book does a great job showing you how everything works and never are you left in the dark wondering why something was done. The only issues I had with the story was the way Darrow was able to escape out of certain predicaments. Brown seemed to play the part of an outside God making chess moves only in favor of the main character. Red Rising is not only a good sci-fi story it can also be tied in to today’s day and age. Making parts of the book more relavent than ever. Packed full of action, adventure, romance and good quotes Red Rising by Pierce Brown is a must read.
“Man cannot be freed by the same injustice that enslaved it.”
― Pierce Brown, Red Rising
Red Rising is book one in a series and Pierce Brown’s debut novel. There are rumors of Red Rising be adapted into film.
Quick log into OASIS and join me on this ultimate Easter egg hunt! If you have not yet read Ready Player One by Ernest Cline you are missing out. This story is set in a dystopian future where most everyone spends their days escaping daily life by logging into a VR (virtual reality) game by the name of OASIS. When stating the story you find out creator of the game, James Halliday, has passed away and is leaving his fortune to whom ever can solve the riddles in an ultimate Easter egg hunt. Through out the story you follow Wade Watts on his hunt, while finding all the 80’s and video game Easter eggs scattered throughout the book. This book has it all action, adventure, a little romance, and friendship. As a self-proclaimed nerd/geek myself, I was able to identify with the characters as they faced social awkwardness and self-doubt. These underdogs turned heroes are the kind of people I can root for. So I urge you, all people who like an unlikely hero and fighting big bad to run out to the nearest store and buy this book. You’ll thank or curse me when you lose sleep with this page turner!!
Ready Player One is currently being made into a movie directed by Steven Spielberg set to release March 30, 2018
